Special guests include Flagler County’s eighth grade girls Jayla Alton and Ashley Andrews who were selected to attend the Tech Trek STEM summer camp at Palm Beach State College and Jaynie Krasowski who was selected to attend the National Conference of College Women Student Leaders Conference at the University of Maryland.  This event is open to the public. Thursday, November 3 – Author Luncheon – 12:00 pm at Mezzaluna Pizzeria in the European Village.  Mark Lane, columnist with the Daytona Beach News Journal, will speak about his book, Legendary Locals of Daytona Beach.  The cost is $25 per person, inclusive of tax and gratuity.  Menu selections include 1) Eggplant Parmesan Hero, 2) Chicken Parmesan with penne pasta, 3) Mama’s summer salad with grilled chicken.  House bread, soda and coffee included.  Proceeds benefit the Scholarship Fund.  For tickets or information contact Sherri Barnett.

The speaker this month will be Professor Mike Butler,  Professor of History at Flagler College. He received both his Master’s and Doctorate in History from the University of Mississippi, where he specialized in 20th century Southern History with an emphasis on the Civil Rights movement.  Dr. Butler’s presentation will be a discussion of his book, “Beyond Integration:  The Black Freedom Struggle in Escambia county, Florida, 1960-1980,”  This event is open to the public. Monday, March 20 – Proclamation to mark April 4, 2017 as Pay Equity Day in Flagler County  – 5:00 pm at the Flagler County Commission meeting in the Board Chambers, Government Services Building, 1769 East Moody Blvd., Bunnell.   Wear red to protest the gender pay gap.

Thursday, March 23 – Panel Discussion – 2:00 – 3:30 pm at the Palm Coast Campus of Daytona State College, Building 3, Room 105.  The topic is “Successful Women Sharing Career Strategies.” Panelists include Faith Alkhatib, Andrea Barr, Milissa Holland, Carmenda Laymon and Kaiti Lenhart.  Moderated by Dr. Nancy Duke.

March – Reading Women – Book discussion group will participate in the Flagler County Public Library’s annual month-long celebration of reading – Flagler Reads Together.  This year’s title is History of Flagler County by Jack Clegg – Supporting the 100th anniversary of Flagler County.  Library events in which Reading Women may participate:                                                              Friday, March 3 @ 2:00 pm – Kickoff – Guest Speaker Sisco Deen from the Flagler County Historical Society.                                                                                                                                             Friday, March 10 @ 2:00 pm – presentation by Bob Stone addressing the Cattle industry in Florida.                                                                                                                                                               Wednesday, March 15 @ 2:00 pm – presentation by Flagler County Extension Office representative, Mark Warren.  A discussion of the farming industry in Flagler County, past, present and future. Free local produce gifts to all attendees to prepare you for St. Patrick’s Day. Refreshments focused on locally grown vegetables.                                                                               Tuesday, March 21 – Bus Tour of Flagler County, sponsored by the  Flagler County Historical Society – leaves from the Holden House in Bunnell.  $20 fee.  Limited to 18 guests.                         Wednesday, March 22 @ 3:30 –  Flagler County Book Discussion group meets.                               Friday, March 24 @ 2:00 pm – Double Feature! Diane Marquis, a local lifetime resident of Flagler County will share her knowledge of the Seminole Indians. She is a retired teacher with a vast knowledge and collection of Seminole Indian memorabilia. Her presentation will be followed by Bill Ryan, a local author, historian, and contributing member to the Friends of the Library. Bill has written six books about the history of Flagler County, including “The Search for Old Kings Road,” His latest is “The Lost Plantations of Flagler County”. He finds unrecognized or under researched history of our area’s Colonial and early American era and has new stories to tell.  We are very excited to present this shared presentation from two people so knowledgeable in Flagler County and Florida History.                                                                             Friday, March 31 @ 2:00 pm – Finale: An Afternoon Tea to Honor our Oldest Founding Families and listen to some of their stories as well as share in some storytelling about the history of Flagler County and maybe some of its founders, politicians, and characters!

This event is open to the public. Lunch is available for $17.00. Menu options –  1) Asian Salad with teriyaki chicken, field greens, mandarin oranges, rice noodles with side of sesame ginger dressing,  2) Grilled chicken pesto wrap with mozzarella cheese, lettuce & tomato with dusted chips,  3)  Personal cheese pizza with mushrooms. Served with side salad. Chocolate Mousse with whipped cream for dessert.  Meal includes coffee, tea, iced tea. Wednesday, May 17 – A “Just for Fun” Event – Holden House Tour & Lunch – 10:00 am at the Holden House, 204 East Moody Blvd in Bunnell.  Private tour of the circa 1918 home built for Ethel Lura Bortree and her husband Tom Holden – now home of the Flagler County Historical Society.  Lunch following the tour at the Chicken Pantry, 602 East Moody Blvd, Bunnell.

Wednesday, May 31 – Saturday, June 3 – National Conference for College Women Student Leaders – held at the University of Maryland, College Park every summer.  The Flagler Branch sends one young woman from the Flagler Campus of Daytona State College to this premier leadership conference each year.

June 11 – 17 – Tech Trek – a week-long STEM camp for girls entering the eighth grade. Campers are nominated by their seventh grade teachers, complete an application, interview before a local selection committee and finally selected by an AAUW state committee. The girls live on campus in residence halls, attend core classes, participate in hands-on workshops, take field trips and experience a professional women’s night. This year’s camp will be held at Palm Beach State College in Boca Raton.

June 14 – 17  AAUW National Convention – Will be held in Washington D.C.
